The ADU process: from design to completion

Building an accessory dwelling unit ADU may seem overwhelming, but with the right team, it can be a smooth and exciting journey. At Home Heart Construction we guide you through every step ensuring your ADU is built on time, on budget, and up to code.

Here's a simple breakdown of the process from design to completion:

Step 1

Initial Consultation and Feasibility Check

  • Schedule a free consultation- Will discuss your goals budget and timeline..
  • Property assessment- We check your lot size zoning rules, and existing utilities.
  • City and county regulations- We determine what's allowed on your property.

Outcome: You'll know if your property qualifies for an ADU and what your options are.

Step 2

ADU Design and Permits

  • Custom Design or Pre-Approved Plans- Choose a plan that fits your needs and budget.
  • Blueprints & Engineering- Our team prepares architectural drawings and ensures everything meets building codes.
  • Permit Submission- We handle all paperwork and approvals from your city and county.

Timeline: Permitting can take 4 to 12 weeks depending on local regulations.

Step 3

Site Preparation & Foundation Work

  • Site Clearing- We prepare the area by removing debris or old structures.
  • Foundation Installation- Depending on your ADU type, this may involve a slab, raised foundation, or reinforced footings.
  • Utility Connections- Water, sewer, electrical, and gas lines are installed or upgraded.

Why this matters: A strong foundation ensures your ADU is safe, stable and durable

Step 4

ADU Construction

  • Framing & Roof Installation- Walls roof and windows take shape!
  • Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC-  We Install all systems according to Title 24 energy requirements.
  • Interior Finishes- Drywall, flooring, cabinets and fixtures bring your ADU to life.
  • Final Touches- Painting and trim work are completed.

Your ADU is almost move-in ready!

* What are considered fixtures?

Fixtures include items that are permanently attached to the ADU, such as sinks, faucets, toilets, built-in cabinets, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, and mounted appliances, (e.g. dishwashers). These are part of the final installation and contribute to the homes overall functionality and design.

Step 5

Final inspections and completion

  • City inspection and code compliance- We insure everything meets legal standards.
  • Final walk-through- We review your ADU with you to make sure it meets your expectations.
  • Move in ready!- Your new ADU is complete and ready for renting, living or hosting guests!
